About us
A story spanning six generations. A bond lasting over two centuries
Since 1820, the Weger family has carried on the art of winemaking in South Tyrol with passion and dedication.
It all began with Josef Weger (1782–1852), one of the pioneers of wine trading in our region. With a bold entrepreneurial spirit, Josef started what would become one of the most historic and deeply rooted wine estates in the area.
Over the years, each generation has added its own contribution: vision, innovation, and respect for the land.
From the first carriages delivering wine to Switzerland and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, to the founding of a second location in Lienz, the Weger family has grown without ever losing its heart.
Deep roots. A forward-looking vision
Today, with the sixth generation actively involved, our estate continues to evolve.
Alongside winemaking, we now offer hospitality: our ancient 12th-century property has been transformed into charming holiday apartments, and our cellar into a cozy stube where guests can enjoy authentic tasting experiences.
We explore new grape varieties, new methods, and new flavors — always in pursuit of excellence.
Every bottle bearing the Wegerhof name reflects our desire to go beyond expectations, to move and inspire those who taste it, and to tell our story - sip by sip.
Our promise: quality, authenticity, and passion
To us, wine is more than a product: it’s culture, identity, and family.
We believe in a kind of viticulture that respects the land, enhances its potential, and keeps tradition alive.
We focus on quality over quantity, because we want every bottle to reflect who we are.
We invite you to discover our world: stroll through our vineyards, taste our wines, stay at our estate, and above all, become part of our story.
The history of the Josef Weger Winery over time
1820
Josef Weger (1782–1852) founded the family business and began wine production in South Tyrol. He was among the pioneers of viticulture and wine trade in the region.
1809–1892
His son, Josef Weger (1809–1892), expanded the business by distributing wines to Switzerland and the Austro-Hungarian Empire using his own horse-drawn carriages.
1850–1918
Josef Weger (1850–1918) modernized the company’s structure and built a new facility dedicated to wine production.
1920s
Johann Weger (1890–1975) established a secondary distribution center in Lienz, East Tyrol — a location that remains an integral part of our business today.
1969
Cav. Josef Weger took over the company’s leadership, continuing the tradition with a modern entrepreneurial vision.
1970s–1980s
During those years, the family broadened its horizons by adding a new tourism venture alongside wine production: two ancient barns from the 1400s were renovated into welcoming apartments, and a historic wine cellar was transformed into a restaurant.
Today
With Dr. Johannes Weger now actively involved, the sixth generation leads with a focus on innovation and quality — always with a deep respect for the family's legacy.
